Two towns, one plateau

Mahabaleshwar or Panchgani?

They are about 20 km apart on the same Sahyadri plateau and most couples treat them as one destination, but they feel different, and so do their venues.

Many of the best resorts actually sit on the road between the two — around Metgutad and the Venna, along the Panchgani–Mahabaleshwar highway — so guests can stay at one property and attend a function at another without much of a drive. That makes it easy to split a big wedding across two venues if no single resort has enough rooms.

Distances and drive times are approximate. Ghat traffic on weekends and long holidays can add an hour or more.

The venues

Nine five-star and luxury venues, compared.

Star ratings in the hills are inconsistent — some are brand five-stars, others are listed as four-star but run weddings at that level. These are the properties couples most often shortlist for a luxury wedding here. Each one has its own page with spaces, capacities, costs and our planning notes.

Bridal makeup in the hills

What changes when the wedding is at 1,350 metres.

Hill-station weddings photograph beautifully and are unforgiving in small ways. This is how we plan for them.

  • Cold, dry morningsIn December and January the early hours are properly cold. Skin tightens and can flake, so prep starts the night before with hydration, and the base is built thin and flexible rather than heavy. A cold face also takes longer to warm up for makeup, and we build that into the timeline.
  • Mist behaves like humidityFog rolling across the valley looks romantic and acts like a steam room. We set the base for humidity, keep powder light, and pin hair so it survives a damp evening on a lawn without dropping.
  • The light changes fastSunset points are half the reason people marry here, but the light goes from gold to blue in minutes. Plan couple portraits for the last forty minutes before sunset, with the bride finished well before.
  • Layers under the outfitOutdoor evenings get chilly. Shawls, a jacket for the haldi, a thermal under the lehenga — we drape around them so the look never has to be redone because someone got cold.
  • The ghat road sets the call timeFrom Pune it is around three hours, and slower on weekends and holidays. For any morning function the team stays at your venue the night before; a sunrise muhurat with a 4 a.m. drive is not a plan.
  • Hold the rooms earlyPeak-season weekends fill quickly. Keep a room with good daylight for the bride and a second for family looks — our team works like a small studio, and the second room saves hours.

A selection from Tejaswini’s portfolio that suits a mountain wedding — soft day looks for the lawn, richer evening looks for a cold night. Every photograph is our own work from weddings across Pune, Mumbai and destination venues; none of them were taken at the venues on this page.

When to marry

The Mahabaleshwar wedding calendar.

The hills have three very different seasons, and the month you choose decides which spaces you can actually use.

MonthsWhat it is likeFor a wedding
October–NovemberPost-monsoon, green and clearing, with cool eveningsExcellent. Book early — Diwali weekends are busy
December–FebruaryCold mornings, dry air, clear skies; strawberry season beginsThe peak season and the best months for outdoor functions
March–MayWarmer days, still pleasant evenings; busy with summer holidaysGood, especially for evening functions
June–SeptemberVery heavy monsoon, with mist and rain most daysIndoor functions only; many lawns and viewpoints are effectively closed

Mahabaleshwar grows most of India’s strawberries, and a winter wedding can lean into that: a strawberry farm makes a lovely pre-wedding shoot location, and Venna Lake, Table Land in Panchgani and the sunset viewpoints are all within a short drive of the resorts.

Questions

Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani wedding questions, answered.

Venue facts come from the hotels and public wedding directories, checked in October 2026. The makeup and timing answers are ours.

How far is Mahabaleshwar from Pune and Mumbai?

Mahabaleshwar is roughly 120 km from Pune, about three hours by road via Satara highway and the Wai ghat. Panchgani comes first on that route, about 20 km before Mahabaleshwar. From Mumbai allow five to six hours. Weekend and holiday traffic on the ghat can add an hour or more.

What are the best five-star wedding venues in Mahabaleshwar?

In Mahabaleshwar: Le Méridien Mahabaleshwar Resort & Spa, Fountain – IHCL SeleQtions, Courtyard by Marriott, Brightland Resort & Spa, Evershine Resort & Spa, Saj on the Mountain and Ramsukh Resorts & Spa. In Panchgani: The Orchid Hotel and The Cliff. Each has its own guide on this site.

Which venue suits a large wedding?

For big guest lists the lawns at Saj on the Mountain and Evershine are listed for up to about 1,000 standing, Ramsukh’s lawn for about 700, and Le Méridien’s Henry Lawns for about 400, with 122 rooms on site. In the hills the room count usually runs out before the lawn does, so check how many guests can actually stay.

Which venue suits an intimate wedding?

The Cliff in Panchgani, with around 41 rooms and decks for about 150, and Fountain in Mahabaleshwar, with 77 rooms and a heritage feel, are both well suited to smaller weddings. Courtyard by Marriott also works well for mid-sized celebrations.

Is there a pure-vegetarian or Jain wedding venue?

Ramsukh Resorts & Spa in Old Mahabaleshwar runs a pure-vegetarian kitchen and offers Jain food. Every other venue on this page can do vegetarian and Jain menus on request.

What is the best time of year for a Mahabaleshwar wedding?

October to February, with December to February the peak for outdoor functions. March to May is good for evening events. Avoid June to September unless every function is indoors — the monsoon here is among the heaviest in Maharashtra.

Can we have an outdoor wedding in the monsoon?

Realistically, no. Heavy rain and mist most days make lawns and decks impractical from June to September. If those are your dates, choose a venue with a large indoor hall.

How cold does it get for early functions?

In December and January early mornings and late nights are cold enough that guests will want shawls and jackets. We plan the drape around layers and prep the skin for cold, dry air.

Who is a good bridal makeup artist in Mahabaleshwar?

Many Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani brides book Tejaswini Gote, a Pune-based Indian bridal makeup artist with 14 years of experience, who travels to the hills with her team for HD and airbrush bridal makeup, hairstyling and draping. Bridal looks are Rs 45,000 each.

Do you travel to Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani?

Yes. Tejaswini is based in Pune and the team travels to the hills for weddings, arriving the day before any morning function. Travel and stay are quoted separately from the bridal package.

How much do you charge for bridal makeup in Mahabaleshwar?

Our bridal rate here is Rs 45,000 per look for HD or airbrush makeup, hairstyling and draping, and Rs 20,000 per look for family members. Travel and stay are quoted separately.

How early should the bride start for a morning muhurat?

A bridal look with hair and draping takes about two and a half to three hours, plus time for photographs before you walk out. Work back from the muhurat, and make sure the team is staying at the venue the night before.

What makeup works best in the hills?

Skin prep for cold, dry air, a thin and flexible base, setting for mist and humidity, and hair pinned for wind. Warm tones — rose, berry, bronze and gold — look beautiful against green valleys and soft mountain light.

Where can we do a pre-wedding shoot near Mahabaleshwar?

Strawberry farms in season, Venna Lake, Table Land in Panchgani and the sunset viewpoints are all popular, and most are a short drive from the resorts. Plan around the light and the crowds, which are heaviest on weekends.
