A little history

A cardinal’s villa that became an exclusive-use house.

Villa Balbiano dates back to the 16th century and was later enlarged by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, the same patron who built Villa del Balbianello down the shore. Its rooms are covered in frescoes and its gardens step down to the lake opposite Isola Comacina.

Restored as a private home, it is now rented for exclusive-use stays and celebrations. Indian families know it from the engagement festivities of Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal in September 2018, which brought the villa to front pages in India.

For a bride, the house is the advantage. Getting ready happens in a frescoed bedroom upstairs rather than a hotel suite, with family close by, and the walk to the garden is short.

Specific to this venue

Villa Balbiano details we plan around.

Worth doing

  • Choose the bride’s room early; window light varies a lot between rooms
  • Plan where the team stays if the villa is full of family
  • Ask the owners’ team about music limits and fire permissions
  • Use the frescoed rooms for portraits before the ceremony

Worth avoiding

  • Very bright, cool-toned makeup that clashes with warm frescoes
  • A crowded bridal room with the whole family getting ready in it
  • Loose hair for an evening garden dinner by the water
  • Assuming hotel-style services such as a salon on site

The wedding day

A typical Villa Balbiano wedding day.

  1. 07:00

Team sets up in a frescoed bedroom in the villa

We ask for a room with good window light and a second room close by for family makeup, so the bride’s room stays calm.

  2. 08:30

    Mothers and family first

Family looks run in parallel with the bridal skin prep, timed so nobody waits in the corridor.

  3. 10:30

    Bride’s skin prep and base

Hydration, primer and a base built for garden daylight and candle-lit evenings.

  4. 12:30

    Hair, eyes, jewellery and draping

Maang tikka, nath and dupatta set with the outfit on, checked from every angle the photographer will use.

  5. 14:00

Portraits in the frescoed rooms and on the garden stairs

First photographs while the makeup is at its freshest, before the busiest part of the day.

  6. 15:30

Baraat and pheras at the garden by the water

One artist stays near the mandap with a touch-up kit: blotting papers, powder, lip and spare pins.

  7. 19:00

    Change for the reception

New lip, refreshed eyes and a second hairstyle if planned; allow 60–75 minutes.

Villa Balbiano questions

Bridal makeup at Villa Balbiano.

Do you provide Indian bridal makeup at Villa Balbiano?

Yes. Tejaswini’s team flies from India for weddings at Villa Balbiano and covers each function for the bride, family and bridal party. The team’s flights, Schengen visas and rooms are paid by the family.

Where does the bride get ready at Villa Balbiano?

Inside the villa, in one of the bedrooms. We pick the room with the best window light and set up a second room for family makeup.

Can the makeup team stay at the villa?

Sometimes, depending on how many rooms the family needs. Otherwise the team stays in Tremezzo or Lenno, a few minutes away.

Is Villa Balbiano suitable for a large wedding?

It suits intimate to mid-sized celebrations best. For very large guest lists, families often use it for one or two functions and another venue for the rest.

Can you do makeup for an engagement or welcome dinner here?

Yes. Many families use the villa for a smaller function, and we plan that look as carefully as the wedding day.

How do we get a quote for a Villa Balbiano wedding?

Message us with the dates, functions and the number of people who need hair and makeup. The quote lists the artist fee and the travel costs on separate lines.
