An English lord’s garden on the edge of a cliff.
Villa Cimbrone stands on a rocky spur at the edge of Ravello. Its medieval buildings were bought and remodelled from 1904 by Ernest Beckett, later Lord Grimthorpe, who created the gardens that now draw visitors from all over the world.
The garden’s long avenue ends at the Terrace of Infinity, a belvedere lined with marble busts that looks straight down the coast. Today the villa is a small hotel, and its gardens are also open to the public by day.
