Behind a 1930s neoclassical façade sit some of the most generous rooms in Istanbul. For a bride with a large family getting ready together, that space is worth a great deal.

About the hotel
The façade keeps its six-storey neoclassical front, while inside a domed atrium, a large silk painting and an art collection of more than a thousand pieces set a quieter, Asian-influenced mood than the Ottoman palaces along the shore.

Getting ready
Most bridal mornings are a negotiation for space: the bride’s chair, the hair station, the outfit, the jewellery, the photographer and a few anxious relatives. Rooms that start at about 42 square metres, and suites with terraces facing the water, give everyone room to work.
We set the bride by the window for daylight and put family makeup in a second room. A suite terrace also makes a lovely place for the first portraits in the outfit, before the light gets harsh.

Using the hotel’s character
Shangri-La’s interiors are unusual for Istanbul. Instead of Ottoman gilding, there is a domed atrium with a Bohemian chandelier, an 18-metre silk painting called The Garden of Peach Blossoms, and more than a thousand works of art across the building. Outside, the courtyard keeps two plane trees thought to be around 150 and 350 years old.
Those details give the photographer options a palace hotel does not. Soft greens and pinks from the silk painting suit pastel mehendi and engagement outfits; the courtyard trees give dappled shade for a haldi or a family portrait; the chandelier gives a classic sparkle for the reception entrance.
For makeup we adjust to each one. Under the atrium chandelier, highlighter is kept to the cheekbones; in the courtyard, the base needs a little more coverage because dappled light shows unevenness; in the suites, by the window, we can be at our most natural.

Tejaswini
Tejaswini is a Pune-born bridal makeup artist with fourteen years and more than a thousand brides behind her. She works from the bride’s suite by the window, with family makeup in a second room, so a spacious Shangri-La suite is exactly how she likes to set up.
