Mahabaleshwar · IHCL SeleQtions, the Taj group

Wedding at Fountain, Mahabaleshwar

Location: Tapola Road, opposite the Koyna valley, Mahabaleshwar · a few minutes from the town centre

One of the oldest hotel estates in Mahabaleshwar, built in the 1880s with timber beams brought from Lancashire and now run by IHCL, the Taj group, under its SeleQtions brand. Eleven acres on the Tapola road, 77 rooms with valley-facing balconies, and what the hotel calls the largest deck in Mahabaleshwar, with its own sunset point. It suits couples who want heritage and a view more than a thousand-guest lawn.

The venue

What Fountain actually is.

A colonial-era hill-station hotel, reopened by IHCL as Fountain, Mahabaleshwar – IHCL SeleQtions: walls of local stone, contemporary-colonial interiors and an all-day restaurant, Saddleback, with a large alfresco area. Its wedding pitch is simple — the deck, the valley and the sunset.

The hotel describes its deck as about 11,000 sq ft — the largest in Mahabaleshwar — with a banquet hall and a large pre-function area alongside, but does not publish seated capacities. One event-planning platform puts the property’s overall capacity at around 339 guests. Ask the hotel for the seated figure for your layout.

This is the venue for a wedding of one or two hundred people who care about a view and a sense of place. The deck faces out over the valley, so the ceremony time decides everything: put the pheras or the varmala in the hour before sunset and the photographs largely take care of themselves.

Our approach

Planning the bridal side at Fountain.

A heritage hotel with a valley-facing deck asks for a different plan from a resort lawn.

  • Time the ceremony to the sunThe deck is the reason to book Fountain. We work back from sunset: bride finished at least an hour before, portraits in the last forty minutes of light, the ceremony as the sky turns.
  • Heritage rooms, honest lightStone-walled rooms with vintage furnishings look beautiful and are rarely bright. We set up by the balcony doors and finish with a daylight lamp so the base matches the outdoors.
  • Wind on the deckAn open deck above a valley catches the breeze. Dupattas are pinned more firmly and hair is set to move without falling.
  • Fewer guests, more looksWith 77 rooms most Fountain weddings are intimate, which usually means more functions per guest and more looks per bride. We plan each one to photograph differently against stone, lawn and sky.

The bridal portfolio

Bridal looks for a sunset wedding.

Picked from Tejaswini’s portfolio with Fountain’s deck and gardens in mind. They are our own work from weddings across Pune, Mumbai and destination venues, not photographs taken at this hotel.

What people forget to budget

  • Taxes and service chargeAsk for an all-inclusive quote in writing.
  • A second hotel for overflowWith 77 rooms, larger families may need rooms elsewhere in town. Budget for transfers between hotels.
  • Decor for an open deckDecor in the open at height needs weighting and wind-proofing, which adds to the decorator’s quote.
  • Vendor roomsThe makeup and photography teams need to be in town the night before.
