Bridal makeup for a wedding at Rambagh Palace

A palace that was a family home until the 1950s still feels like one: long verandas, sunlit lawns, rooms full of portraits. Tejaswini plans each of your looks for the exact corner of Rambagh it will be photographed in.

How it became a hotel

From a handmaiden's garden house to the Maharaja's palace.

Rambagh began in 1835 as a modest garden house for a favoured lady-in-waiting of the royal household. Over the following decades it grew into a hunting lodge and then, in 1925, into the main residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, who added the formal rooms and gardens that guests know today.

In 1957 the family opened it as a hotel, one of the first palaces in India to take paying guests. Taj has run it since. The scale is domestic rather than monumental, which is why wedding functions here tend to feel like a large family gathering instead of an event in a ballroom.

For makeup, the palace has two very different kinds of light. The lawns are open and bright, with almost no shade at midday. The interiors are high-ceilinged and warm-toned, lit by chandeliers and lamps. One base will not do both well.

Function by function

Four looks, four parts of the palace.

Fresh haldi look by Tejaswini

Mehendi on the lawns

Open sky and green all round. A light, sun-protected base, soft flush and hair kept off the neck so the mehendi artist can work.

Sangeet look with a deeper eye by Tejaswini

Sangeet in a palace hall

Warm tungsten and mirrored surfaces. More eye definition and a contour that survives several hours of dancing.

Pheras under the open sky

Afternoon or evening mandap on the lawn. A satin finish that does not flash, a secure dupatta and kundan balanced against a bold lip.

Reception look in gold by Tejaswini

Reception on the veranda

Columns, lanterns and a long line of photographs. A sleeker hairstyle and a cooler palette so the album does not repeat the wedding day.

Wedding day

How a Rambagh wedding day usually runs.

  1. 09:00

    Set-up in the bridal suite

A suite with a north- or east-facing window gives the cleanest daylight for the base.

  2. 11:00

    Bride begins

Skin prep, base and eyes first; hair and drape follow. Around three hours for a full traditional look.

  3. 14:30

    Portraits indoors

Palace rooms and corridors before the afternoon heat reaches the lawns.

  4. 16:30

    Baraat arrives

Final checks while the groom's side comes up the drive.

  5. 17:30

    Pheras

Touch-up kit at the mandap: powder, lip, safety pins, blotting papers.

  6. 20:00

    Reception change

New lip, refreshed eyes and a second hairstyle if one was planned.

Specific to Rambagh

Small decisions that help on the day.

Worth doing

  • Ask for a getting-ready suite with daylight rather than one chosen only for its view
  • Keep a second room for the mother, sisters and bridesmaids so the bridal suite stays calm
  • Schedule couple portraits on the lawns in the last hour of daylight
  • Share the jewellery plan early: heavy polki changes how the hair is built

Worth avoiding

  • Shimmer-heavy highlighter for a midday lawn function
  • Open curls if the pheras are outdoors on a windy evening
  • Booking the bride's slot after the family's; the order should be the other way round
  • Leaving less than an hour between the wedding and reception looks

Rambagh Palace questions

Bridal makeup at Rambagh Palace.

Does Tejaswini travel to Rambagh Palace for weddings?

Yes. She is based in Pune and flies to Jaipur for booked weddings, working from your suite at Rambagh. Travel and her room are paid by the family at cost.

How much does bridal makeup cost for a Rambagh wedding?

Bridal looks start at Rs 50,000 each, including makeup, hairstyling and draping. Family looks are Rs 25,000 and groom grooming Rs 10,000. Travel and stay are added separately.

Which room should the bride get ready in?

A suite with natural light, close to where the first function takes place. Windows matter more than the size of the room.

Will the makeup hold on an open lawn in the afternoon?

Yes, if it is built for it: long-wear products, a satin rather than glowing finish, and touch-ups planned before the pheras and before portraits.

Can you do looks for the whole family?

Yes. Extra artists can be booked for the family so the bride's own time is never cut short.

How early should we book for Rambagh?

As soon as your date is fixed with the hotel. Winter dates in Jaipur fill early.
