Bridal makeup at Jai Mahal Palace

Jai Mahal is the Jaipur palace with the most lawn: 18 acres of Mughal gardens close to the city centre. That space makes it a favourite for big outdoor weddings, and outdoor weddings make specific demands on a bride's makeup.

Before you enquire

Based in Pune, travelling to Jai Mahal for your wedding.

Tejaswini works out of Pune. For a Jai Mahal wedding she flies into Jaipur, stays near the palace and styles the bride personally; extra artists join for family looks if needed. Her train or flight, room and local transfers are paid by the couple and appear as their own lines.

History

A minister's garden house that kept growing.

Jai Mahal traces its origins to 1745, when the site was a garden residence for a nobleman of the Jaipur court. It later served as the residence of the state's Prime Minister and was expanded into the Indo-Saracenic palace that stands today.

Now a Taj hotel, it sits in Civil Lines, a short drive from the old city and close to Jaipur's railway station. Its defining feature is the garden: 18 acres of lawns, fountains and walkways that can be divided into several function spaces at once.

For a bride, a lawn wedding means sky light from every direction and nowhere to hide from it. It also means guests are outdoors for hours, and so is she.

Lawn-wedding tips.

Worth doing

  • Schedule portraits indoors at midday and outdoors at golden hour
  • Ask for a getting-ready suite close to the lawns
  • Plan a shawl for December evening functions
  • Agree touch-up times with the planner in advance

Worth avoiding

  • Very shiny highlighters under open sky
  • Loose, unpinned dupattas in the evening breeze
  • Starting the bride late on a big-guest-list day
  • One look for both the pheras and the reception
