Weddings in Karjat

Location: Raigad district, Maharashtra · Sahyadri foothills on the Ulhas river · about two hours from Mumbai and Pune

Karjat is where Mumbai families go when they want a wedding with space: riverside resorts, farm estates measured in acres, lawns that take a thousand guests and hills on every side. It sits below the ghat, on the Mumbai side, so it is greener and warmer than Lonavala and far less crowded. This guide compares the venues worth shortlisting, the season and the budget, and explains how Tejaswini plans the bridal side.

Why Karjat

Karjat or Lonavala?

They are only about 45 minutes apart, on either side of the ghat. Couples usually decide on three things: the guest list, the weather and where most guests are coming from.

KarjatLonavala & Khandala
SettingRiver valley and farmland ringed by hillsHill town on the ghat, valley viewpoints
VenuesBig estates: riverside resorts and farm resorts with very large lawnsEstablished hill resorts, more of them, closer together
WeatherWarmer and more humid, especially from MarchCooler, misty winter mornings
Best for guests fromMumbai and Navi MumbaiPune and Mumbai equally
CrowdsQuieter outside monsoon weekendsBusy on most weekends

If you like the idea of Karjat but need the hill-town feel, compare it with our Lonavala & Khandala guide. Novotel Imagicaa in Khopoli sits between the two and is often shortlisted alongside the Karjat resorts.

Distances and drive times are approximate. Karjat is reached from Pune via the Expressway and Khopoli, or by train to Karjat junction.

Bridal makeup in Karjat

A river-valley wedding, planned for the weather.

Karjat is lower and warmer than the hill stations. That changes the makeup more than people expect.

  • Heat and humidityAfternoons in Karjat can be warm even in winter, and the river adds moisture. Bases are kept thin, set for humidity and refreshed between functions rather than layered on.
  • Big estates, long distancesAt a 180-acre property the lawn can be a buggy ride from the rooms. We plan where the bride gets ready, how she reaches the venue and where we do touch-ups.
  • Day functions in the shadeFor haldi and mehendi we look for shade and plan lighter, more breathable looks so nobody is melting by lunch.
  • Two hours from PuneFor any function before noon the team stays at the venue the night before. That is built into the travel line on the quote.
  • Evenings cool downWinter nights in the valley are pleasant and can turn cool by the river. We drape around shawls and keep the evening look rich enough for warm lighting.

When to marry

The Karjat wedding calendar.

Karjat is greenest in the rains and most comfortable in winter. For a lawn wedding, winter wins.

MonthsWhat it is likeFor a wedding
October–NovemberLush after the monsoon, warm daysGood; evening functions are most comfortable
December–FebruaryDry, clear, pleasant days and cool nightsThe best months for lawns and outdoor pheras
MarchWarming up quicklyFine for evening events
April–MayHot and humid in the valleyIndoor or late-evening functions only
June–SeptemberHeavy monsoon, waterfalls and river in spateIndoor halls only; riverside spaces are best avoided

For a pre-wedding shoot, the Ulhas riverbanks, the paddy fields after the rains, the waterfalls around Bhivpuri and the resort estates themselves all work well. Avoid monsoon weekends, when the area fills with day-trippers.
