Bridal makeup at SUJÁN The Serai

The Serai is a camp, not a hotel: 21 canvas tents on a hundred acres of desert scrub, a step-well pool and dinners under the stars. It is for the smallest, most private weddings, and the bride gets ready in a tent.

Please note

From Pune to a desert camp.

Tejaswini is based in Pune. At The Serai she travels light with her own lighting and power-independent kit, and stays at or near the camp for the celebration. You cover the travel and the room; neither is folded into the bridal price.

About the camp

Inspired by the royal caravans.

SUJÁN The Serai draws on the travelling camps of Rajput royalty: large canvas tents on stone bases, furnished with campaign furniture and textiles. It stands on a private desert estate some distance from Jaisalmer, with a spa and a raised pool shaped like a step-well.

With only 21 tents, it suits a guest list that fits around one long dinner table. Couples who choose it usually want quiet, landscape and food rather than spectacle.

Getting ready in a tent changes things. Light comes through canvas and is soft but uneven, there is fine dust in the air, and evenings are cold. The kit, the lighting and the products are chosen for that.

At a desert camp

Camp wedding notes.

Worth doing

  • Bring a warm layer that works with the outfit
  • Keep the guest list to what the camp can hold
  • Plan portraits in the dunes an hour before sunset
  • Protect lashes and lips from dry air

Worth avoiding

  • Complex hairstyles that cannot survive wind
  • Very heavy outfits for walking on sand
  • Relying on tent light alone for makeup
  • Bright highlighter in dusty light

The Serai questions

The Serai makeup questions.

Does Tejaswini travel to The Serai near Jaisalmer?

Yes. She flies or takes the train from Pune and stays near The Serai; those costs are passed on without mark-up.

Can the bride get ready in a tent?

Yes. Portable lighting is used so the result does not depend on canvas light.

How many guests can The Serai take?

It has 21 tents, so weddings are very small. The camp confirms numbers.

What does it cost?

Bridal looks begin at Rs 50,000 (makeup, hair and drape together). Mothers and sisters are Rs 25,000 each.

Is it cold at night?

In winter, yes. Plan a warm layer and skin prep for dry air.
