Wedding makeup at Suryagarh, Jaisalmer

Suryagarh is a modern fort in golden stone on the edge of the Thar, about fifteen minutes out of Jaisalmer. Weddings here mean desert wind, bright days, cold nights and sand that gets everywhere, and the bride's look has to cope with all four.

What it is like

A fort made for the desert.

Suryagarh was built in the style of Jaisalmer's old forts, with ramparts, towers and courtyards in the same golden stone as the city. It sits on the Sam road west of town, surrounded by open desert.

Planners like it because it offers several outdoor spaces, from small courtyards to large lawns, and the desert itself for dinners among the dunes. Most weddings take the whole hotel.

Desert weather is the challenge. Winter days are bright and dry, the wind can pick up in the afternoon, and evenings are cold. Skin dries out fast, so preparation matters as much as the makeup.

In the desert

Suryagarh tips.

Worth doing

  • Start skin hydration a week before the wedding
  • Plan a shawl or jacket look for evening functions in winter
  • Pin the dupatta for wind before stepping outside
  • Keep a touch-up kit with a sealed lid for sandy outdoor dinners

Worth avoiding

  • Heavy matte bases that crack in dry air
  • Open hair for a dune dinner
  • Assuming city weather; nights in the desert are cold
  • Long gaps without water during outdoor functions
