History

Where Jaipur's royals stayed for the hunt.

Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur built the lodge in the 1930s as a base for hunting parties in the forests that are now Ranthambore National Park. Ministers and royal guests stayed in the rooms; the suites were the Maharaja's own.

Today it is a heritage hotel run under IHCL, and the original dining hall, bar and lounge keep their Art Deco details: geometric lines, chequered floors and wide verandas.

Its lawns host small weddings, and its period interiors give portraits a character that new resorts cannot.

At the lodge

Lodge wedding notes.

Worth doing

  • Use the verandas and dining hall for portraits
  • Plan guest travel by train to Sawai Madhopur
  • Add a safari morning for guests
  • Keep the look classic to suit the setting

Worth avoiding

  • Very modern, trend-led glam that fights the period interiors
  • Large guest lists for a small lodge
  • Outdoor functions late on winter nights without a wrap
  • Skipping skin prep before travel
